What might cause left flank pain?

I have a history of GERD and IBS symptoms (not diagnosed). I've had my gallbladder removed (aprox. 7 months ago). I woke up one day with pain in my left flank. Also felt bloated and nauseous. Pain increased all day until I finally took pain meds and it gradually went away. I also drank lots of water. I ate a danish two days before this episode. Can it have caused this pain? I've been fine since the surgery as long as I don't overeat or eat too much fat.

Hi Danna

There are several things that can cause flank pain, but one of the most common is a kidney issue like a stone or infection. Either of these would cause nausea as well. Do you have any other symptoms? It could be intestinal but flank pain often makes us think kidney.

Are you running any kind of fever? What is the pain like? Anything else? Diarrhea or constipation? I suggest if it continues, you see your health care provider to make sure you don't have anything going on.

If you have more symptoms or want to discuss this further, please write again. I hope you feel better soon.
