Hi, I had gotten my first Depo Provera shot about 1 month ago- yesterday my right breast became very sore, just this morning as I got out of the shower, I noticed a hard, tender bump right next to my nipple, it looked like a giant white head so I was like, "eww, thats disgusting," so naturally, I tried to pop it, and white/creamy yellow gunk came out; now there is still a lump from it underneath and looks like just a scab, and is tender to touch. I know one of the, less common, side effects of the Depo shot is having sore breast, but is this normal? Is it really just a gross pimple, not something serious?

Ok Kelsey,
July 8, 2010 - 9:12amI heard back from my friend, and here's what she had to say,
"I don't think that has anything to do with her DepoProvera. It sounds like something similar to a pimple or what some would call a boil, likely a folliculitis. If it remains tender or she continues to have a bump she should have it looked at as she may need antibiotics."
Here's a link about folliculitis from the Mayo Clinic:

Good luck, and don't forget to contact your doctor if it happens often, or if it doesn't go away.

Hi Kelsey,
July 8, 2010 - 8:21amThanks for your question and for being a part of the EmpowHer Community.
I have a couple good friends who are OB/GYNs, I've asked them. I'll let you know when they respond. I'm thinking it's nothing serious, but wanted to ask them just to be certain.
