About 18 months ago I suffered from a recto cele and had a procedure to repair this condition. I had a hysterectomy 14 years previously.
This was done by a gaenocologist and when I went for my 6week check up he was happy that it was a sucess. About four months ago I started developing urinary tract infections and a heavy feeling plus was having great difficulty with emptying my bowel.
Plus I could feel a protrusion when I was standing.
I went to my family doctor who said it was nothing to worry about but I was not happy
My mother suffered with prolapse of the rectum which ultimately caused her death last year as she had 2 ops in 3 months to try and fix this debilitating condition.
She was 90 years of age and not strong enough to cope with this.
I am now worried that I may have this path to follow as I grow old.
Do you have any advice
Regards
Nanama

Hi Nanama,
July 22, 2010 - 9:17amI found this link on EmpowHer:
https://www.empowher.com/vaginal-prolapse/content/vaginal-prolapse-what-it-and-how-it-treated-mayo-clinic-dr-cornella
I also found this information from the American Urogynecology Society:
Prolapse FAQ: http://www.mypelvichealth.org/TreatmentPrevention/PelvicOrganProlapse/Prevention/tabid/73/Default.aspx
Prevention of Prolapse: http://www.mypelvichealth.org/TreatmentPrevention/PelvicOrganProlapse/Prevention/tabid/73/Default.aspx
Both did state that there always is a chance for vaginal prolapse to recur. The good news is that you do have some control, and can work toward minimizing the risk by following recommended guidelines. As Dr. Cornella said in the first link, when they do surgery they try to decrease the need for future repeat surgery.
Did your doctor give you any indication of how likely they think your condition will recur?
Good luck and let us know how you are.
