My feet, legs, and joints are stiff in the morning why?

Wow I am having nearly the same condition. My feet, legs, and knees hurt all the time. But it is worse in the morning, and I am stiff as a board when I get out of bed. It does gradually get better throughout the day. I am 5'6 160lbs. But it always still hurts, when I sit or stand in one position for more than 15minutes it gets worse. My muscles tighten, they become stiff. I can't walk down stairs (I can go up, my knees just make creeking sounds). This all started last May, when my right knee swelled up really big (no injury) then fluid traveled all over in my leg, mostly the way gravity took it, to my ankle. I had no insurance at then time, so I had some crutches at home from my Grandfather, I used those because I couldn't walk. It took a week or do for the swelling to go away. I was scheduled to be out of country in July for a month visiting family, so I went even with my leg bothering me (I could walk again at this point). I was there two weeks and got Shingles, I flew home with it and got trated for it. I still can't walk well, and all of my "old" injuries hurt too, like my pinky finger I broke in 4th grade. I strech still daily, and exercise even though it is extremely painful. It hurts so bad I developed a jaw clinching thing I do it constantly, that hurts too (but not nearly as bad). Any ideas of what the heck is going on with my body? Oh I forgot to mention I went to an orthopedic surgeon, and he told me to lose some weight, he sent me for an xray of my right leg, since that is where it all started, and I haven't been back. The xray was negative.

I have all the same symptoms as the op. I am 51. It started with a little stiffness in my fingers, then my knees and my feet. I feel like an 80 year old woman. I have seen my doctor and have inflammatory markers elevated, but am yet to be tested for thyroid or RA. I intend to follow these posts and hopefully find a solution. This is hell.

I also experience the same problems and have autoimmune thyroiditis. Have you physician check your TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone), anything over 2 is suspect for sluggish thyroid. Also, be sure to have your physician check for thyroid antibodies. Although my T3 & T4 thyroid hormones were normal levels, my TSH could fall between 3.5 and even over 5. This is when I was the most ill. Normal antibodies are less than 35, mine were almost 700. You may need treatment for thyroid problems. I take a low dose 88 Synthroid and it relieves the muscle cramping and aches. I had a phenomenal European physician who once told me that before the 1920's there was no such thing as Fibromyalgia or ME. They are both thyroid issues and can be helped with thyroid medicine. Unfortunately, most physicians prescribe pain pills, anti-inflammatory medications or anti-depressants. Some of the new anti-depressants are supposed to relieve pain. These medications only mask the symptoms which are all symptoms (including depression) of thryoid problems.

I hope this helps.

Although at night my legs hurt/stiff when I sleep and it causes me to toss/turn all night. I try to stretch them but it does not seem to help. SO a BIG THANK YOU to the Anonymous for the zyflemend tip!!! A THANK YOU for this website, I am so glad to have people to reach out to. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

I just wanted to add this little bit. (not a doctor but)I have the same symtoms but I just had a baby 10 months ago and am currently breast feeding. I do believe that it could also be caused by too much vitamins. If you are eating healthy and also taking vitamins, you may be overdosing on the vitamins (which has symtoms like joint stiffness). I too believe in eating healthy and organic as much as posible but I know that when I take vitamins too (as I did when I was pregnant and for the first 6 mons for breast feeding) I feel bad and gain weight. I actually weigh more now then I did when I was pregnant. Anyway, I thought that I would pass this on.

I experience the same things. When I went to the health food store to purchase vitamins they recommended a product called zyflemend. It really helped in just 2 weeks. The only problem is it caused me stomach upset but I have a very sensitive stomach. It really did help. I stopped taking it to see if that was my stomach problem and my stiffness returned. I'm going to start taking it again and see if my body well adjust to it after longer use.

What is zyflemend? What is it supposed to do? Did you take it with food? I will definately research this product, because I do believe in vitamins. I take vitamins everyday.

I have been on Naproxen for nearly two weeks, with no physical change in my situation. I wish I had someone like you to help me ask questions to this doctor. I am so clueless on what to ask. I did talk to her last week on the phone, I told her that the Naproxen is not working, she told me that it takes time and to stay on it. I take it twice daily. I also take vitamins, the usual like fish oil, vit. D, Bcomplex 50, and a womens multi vitamin. I was kinda upset when she made the comment that "We know you are being truthful because we see inflamation in your blood report." But I just didn't say anything to that because I really just want to get to the bottom of this thing. I will get a list of the type of test conducted, but what other questions can I ask? Other than Why the heck is my body inflammed? (I asked that one).

Okay, I went to a Rhumatologist. She tested my blood for Rhumatiod Arthritis, and several other diseases. I was negative on all counts. Also I did an Xray of my hands and knees, negative results. However, the doctor did fond that my blood contained high levels of inflamation. I was perscribed Naproxen 500 MG. I asked her why my body is inflammed, specifically my knees and legs? She told me she did not know, and that I could have the kind of arthritis that does not show up in the blood. She also told me that If I had arthritis I would not be able to exercise my legs and knees as I do. But my problem is NOT the exercise, it is the INactivity (when I sleep or sit for longer than 20 minutes. I am so freakin confused. WHen I go to stand up my legs and feet ache, and are Extremely Stiff. It takes me a minute or two, to unstiffen my legs by streching them or move them around slowly. Has anyone experienced this?
