My health insurance has changed their rules about how often they will pay for breast exams and now will only pay for them half as often as before.
My family has some history with breast cancer but it is a big family so it doesn't seem like a problem.
Is it worth paying for more frequent mammograms?

Hello Anonymous,
That is a good question.
A screening mammogram is an x-ray image of the breast and is used to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms. Early detection of breast cancer with screening mammograms lead to earlier intervention and a better prognosis.
There is debate regarding the benefit from regular screening mammography in women under age 40.
Based on your family history of breast cancer, your physician may recommend an annual mammogram. You are at a greater risk if your mother and or grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer last May. As a result, I must have a mammogram every six months. In such cases of medical necessity, an insurance provider will approve and pay for the test.
Your health is priceless.
