HPV Concerns

I was diagnosed with HPV almost a year ago. I did get genital warts because I have a weak immune system. Ever since I heard the diagnosis I feel horrible about myself. I have done my research and I know all about HPV and how many people have it, but I feel as if I am dirty and not a clean person anymore. Has anyone ever went through this before and is there anything you would recommend to help me overcome this?
Thank you and I welcome any suggestions.

Hi Bethanee Elizabeth,

I'm sorry you have this diagnosis..it is really difficult to live with, and many, many people do struggle with an STD diagnosis. You are not alone in your feelings.

Please know that you did not "get" HPV because you have a weak immune system, and having HPV does not make you "dirty". HPV is highly contagious, so people with any type of immune system can contract this virus.

There are some resources that you can utilize, in hopes of making you feel better about your diagnosis. Are you interested in talking with others online who have been diagnosed with HPV? Are you interested in talking one-on-one with a counselor who specializes in sexual health?
- "HPV Support Groups" (available in a few States)
- Go Ask Alice (an online Q&A among college students regarding sexual health)

Please also feel free to provide your age, city/state information, and we can send you some more detailed information/resources available in your area. Are you currently at school, University or a full-time job that has options (confidential and anonymous) available to you? You can click on my name above (in orange) and provide this personal information, and I will send you resources.

Take care, and please let us know if you have any additional questions.
