Q:

Hip pain in middle of the night; dull ache that wakes me up. What could it be?

I am in my mid-30s, and have recently been having pain in my hips in the middle of the night. It reminds me of the RLS (restless leg syndrome) commercials, although I do not have any of these symptoms (no needle-sensation, no crawling-sensation). It is a dull ache, and I try to move my hips and legs around to get rid of the pain (it feels like it is deep inside, not a muscle or bone), but moving it seems to irritate it a little more. It is actually not on my hip bone, but closer to the middle of my "gluteus maximus" on each side. It's been happening the past few weeks, always around 2am or 3am and wakes me up.

I've been taking some ibuprofen, and eventually falling back asleep, but would rather not have to keep taking medication.

When I was pregnant with my child 3 years ago, I had a real problem with my sciatic (spelling?) nerve in my hips. Feels similar, but not the same.

Any suggestions?

I have had hip pain for years and tried the chiropractor, acupuncture, message treatments and now I am going to physical therapy. The first thing I told him was that when ever I got in my car the pain was almost instant. The therapist asked if I had bucket seat that cradled me into place. Yes I do. He suggested to put a cushion in the center of my bucket seat to make it like a flat seat. When seats cradle you it pushes on your hip. When your seat is flat it take the pressure off the trochanter (where your hip joint is) relieving the pressure. Besides first putting my hip back into alignment and a few exercises this was the first practical advise I received that made sense.

I am a 39 year old who has had dull hip pain and now back pain for the past 3 days and long nights! I have never felt anything like this before. The only relief I get is from standing. I don't know whether to try a chiropractor or go see my doctor first ( the latter will probably take a week or so to be seen). ANy thoughts?

This sounds similar. I am 42, just in the last year I started having aching in my hip only while sleeping. However, it is only on the hip that I am laying on. I roll over and I have a few hours before the other starts aching too. I have no pain at all while awake.
I am not very active, but not overweight.

I have exactly the same problem with my hips at night. If I put my futon pad on the floor and lay on it instead of the bed the pain noticably subsides. I'm sure I need a firmer mattress. I'm also going to start taking glucosamin w/contritan (sp). I think thats the underlying reason for the hip pain a lot of us are experiencing. A number of you say that you can't think of any specific reason or cause for the pain. I had a Honda Civic a few years back which had bucket seats. It took me a long time to notice it, but one day right after I got into my car I realized I had just moved a certain way to avoid bumping into my steering wheel while sliding quickly into my seat. I had twisted my hips into an unnatural angle for just a second to get them under the steering wheel and then with my hips still at this angle I sat down in my seat. So while straining my hips just a bit into this unnatural angle for just a second or two I then dropped my entire body weight into my hip cradle, so to speak. If I just did this once in a while it would have been no big deal. But I did it every day, at least three but usually four to five times a day. For probably a year or more. It was such a minor strain and for two seconds. But I didn't see the trauma I was causing my hip. I could always feel my hip as I landed in my seat, but it didn't hurt. Plus I had cloth seats, so there's a lot of resistance there as well. As soon as I figured it out I never got in or out of my car again without pushing the seat back. Guess what? Pain went away. Unfortunatly the damage was done. I think I wore away all the cushiony stuff inside the hip (not the bursa). But guess what? That cushiony stuff is called glucosamine, and if you take glucosamine suppliments the glucosamine gets deposited right into all your joints. It won't hurt to move anymore. Just take it like it says to on the bottle. It takes anywhere from two to three weeks before you notice that you didn't feel that familiar old ache you always felt when you did a particular thing. Try it.

Are you pregnant as well? Mine is only in my hips, on both sides, it bothers me during the day when I have my afternoon naps, but like you say you can handle it and so can i. But the night is worse, it wakes me up, and I usually have to turn sides. Though I have not had a good night sleep in over 4 years, since I lost my first born. My next doctor's appt. I am going to talk to her about it, and about what the previous comment said about vitamin d deficency.

I have the same problem as most of the women who have commented here. I wake up at night with pain in my hip and down towards my knee and then down my calf. Funny thing though, it's only in the right leg. Now seems to affect my right arm too. My doc suggested it was arthritis in my hip but I can't explain to him how much this hurts. I can stand it in the daytime but come night and that's another story. I'm not overly physically active, I have a sit down job but do get some exercise. I need some advice on what to to before it wears me down more. Because of the pain I am losing sleep. it is not good for anybody.

Sounds like a vitamin D deficiency. Take your thumb and press on your sternum...if it hurts...you might have osteomalacia.
