I have exactly the same problem with my hips at night. If I put my futon pad on the floor and lay on it instead of the bed the pain noticably subsides. I'm sure I need a firmer mattress. I'm also going to start taking glucosamin w/contritan (sp). I think thats the underlying reason for the hip pain a lot of us are experiencing. A number of you say that you can't think of any specific reason or cause for the pain. I had a Honda Civic a few years back which had bucket seats. It took me a long time to notice it, but one day right after I got into my car I realized I had just moved a certain way to avoid bumping into my steering wheel while sliding quickly into my seat. I had twisted my hips into an unnatural angle for just a second to get them under the steering wheel and then with my hips still at this angle I sat down in my seat. So while straining my hips just a bit into this unnatural angle for just a second or two I then dropped my entire body weight into my hip cradle, so to speak. If I just did this once in a while it would have been no big deal. But I did it every day, at least three but usually four to five times a day. For probably a year or more. It was such a minor strain and for two seconds. But I didn't see the trauma I was causing my hip. I could always feel my hip as I landed in my seat, but it didn't hurt. Plus I had cloth seats, so there's a lot of resistance there as well. As soon as I figured it out I never got in or out of my car again without pushing the seat back. Guess what? Pain went away. Unfortunatly the damage was done. I think I wore away all the cushiony stuff inside the hip (not the bursa). But guess what? That cushiony stuff is called glucosamine, and if you take glucosamine suppliments the glucosamine gets deposited right into all your joints. It won't hurt to move anymore. Just take it like it says to on the bottle. It takes anywhere from two to three weeks before you notice that you didn't feel that familiar old ache you always felt when you did a particular thing. Try it.
