Q:

Have you had experience with the Wiley Protocol?

Has anyone had experience using the Wiley Protocol of hormone replacement therapy?

It is a method where bioidentical hormones are prescribed and are given transdermally -- through the skin -- in a patent-pending cream. A primary

difference between this protocol and some others is that the hormonal levels rise and fall, similar to the way a woman's normal cycle did when she was still menstruating.

There is some controversy on the web about T.S. Wiley's qualifications for developing a medical protocol, since she is not a doctor herself, she studied anthropology (though she co-authored the book "Sex, Lies, and Menopause" with Julie Taguchi, M.D.)

Some women claim wonderful results; others claim very troubling side effects. Does anyone out there have personal experiences to share?

I can't find where Suzanne claims she does not use the Wiley protocol. In fact, when I went to research this, I found that as of June 2009, she WAS still using it. http://www.suzannesomers.com/Blog/post/Newsweek-Attack-Huh.aspx

Amanda,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It sounds like you had a really rough time. How long did you follow the protocol before you stopped?

And have you since tried any other form of hormone replacement therapy?

I went to a Wiley Protocol doctor in Olney, Maryland for symptoms of PMS. After paying him $760.00, I got a prescription from knowles apothecary/compounding pharmacy for estradiol and progesterone creams. When my head started feeling like it was being squeezed in a vice and my period was coming 8 to 10 days later than it usually does, [name edited by EmpowHer] my doctor informed me that I would have to come in every week at the tune of $300 a visit to make adjustments, as he only caters to the elite. So I contacted Wiley and told them that during the estrogen phase, I got bad headaches and could they offer me any suggestions they told me to increase the amount of estrogen. I got tachycardia and my head felt like it would explode, so obviously, this was a wrong decision. I stopped the estrogen and called Wiley headquarters back. They told me I should go off the protocol since I was "doing my own thing anyway and not following their protocol". Jeez, thanks a lot Wiley. I checked thewileyprotocol website for answers and when I clicked on "about T.S. Wiley", I got that it was a corporation, no info. on T.S. Wiley herself. Ends up, she made this whole hormone protocol up and doesn't have the slightest training in endocrinology. She is a reporter/author. Thats it.

Sounds like you need to find a different doctor. I've had mine for 5 years now, and she doesn't charge any more for prescribing the Wiley Protocol. It also sounds to me like you're another plant because your ending statement is the same dribble that the BigPHarm is using to try and scare everyone away from using the Wiley Protocol. Be gone.

Anon,

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. Clearly, something wasn't going right for you, and it seems terribly wrong that a doctor wouldn't see a patient for followup -- or, if the patient couldn't afford it, at least refer the patient to a more reasonably priced alternative. I am very glad that you advocated for yourself when you kept feelilng bad.

I hope you are doing well now? You didn't mention.

It can't be emphasized enough. If you care about yourself, if you care about your fellow sisters, watch out for those who have something to sell. Use good judgment and decide for yourself.

I have been on the Wiley Protocol for 18 months. During the first three months, I had to cut back & slowing increase the progesterone. Now, no problems at all. I take some pills for bloating as the progesterone cycle winds down. One thing I might mention is that I went on bhrt, a smaller static dose, like four days into menopause. Then, about five months later when that was not quite working so well, I went on the Wiley Protocol. My MD thinks that is the main reason I've had little in the way of side effects....I really did not allow myself to experience full menopause. Like, with my first symptoms on a Sunday....next day I was phoning for an appointment for bhrt & got myself on something right away. I've had no weight issues. I get the impression it's harder to do WP if you've been in menopause for awhile. My libido is fantastic, and I can't have any issues with that. In addition, for years I did progesterone cream, DHEA, melatonin, amono acids, so it wasn't like doing bhrt was totally new for my body. I turned 50 this month,....I was carded for alcohol on my birthday, and I give alot of credit to excellent health to taking hormones for nearly 10 years.

I just received this:

"Hi, I tried the Wiley Protocol for a year and have been off of it for a
year now because I had so many problems. I still have problems that were
caused by this, I wondered if you would want to add my experience anywhere
on the site...also if anyone else has any ideas to help me. I tried asking
for help from Wiley, and after they got my email explaining my problems
they had my doctor send me a registerd letter "dumping" me. Very scary how
defensive they are.
Thanks, [redacted]"

The Wileys try to make it sound as if there's just a handful of unhappy women from a few years ago but this is completely false and, as this note shows, they know it.
