Bariatric Surgery: Will I Experience Hunger After The Procedure? - Donna Simon, R.D.

None of my patients have ever starved or were hungry after any of their bariatric surgeries.

The gastric sleeve I’d have to say is probably one of the ones that my patients come back to tell me, I am never hungry. I always have to remind myself to eat and set a timer.

My gastric bypass, they are so used to eating smaller portions because we have it drilled into their heads that they do, you know, if they get hungry they will call me saying what am I doing wrong.

And a lot of times it’s you know, they are either eating and drinking at the same time and that’s one rule we do not allow because no matter what surgery, your pouch is filled with food, and now you are drinking, you are flushing the food out.

So what’s going to happen in ten minutes? You are going to be hungry so you are going to re-eat.

So I mean a lot of the patients, they have learned the rules of eating but when it comes to the band, a lot of them do get hungry and that usually means they need a band adjustment.

Or if they are still hungry I use to tell them have some fluids first, have some water because maybe you really aren’t hungry, you are just filling into your old ways of eating.

Donna Simon, M.S., R.D., earned her B.A. in Food and Nutrition and her M.S. at Queens College in Flushing, New York. She practiced extensively in the state of New York. She was a Consultant Dietitian at Long Island Development Center. She served as a Registered Dietitian at Parkview Nursing Home in Massapequa, and at North Shore University Hospital in Plainview. Ms. Simon was a Clinical Dietitian and Bariatric Nutritionist at Banner Mesa Medical Center in Mesa, and is presently Bariatric Coordinator and a Nutrition Specialist at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona.
