Registered Dietitian Donna Simon discusses how family members can affect your weight loss success after bariatric surgery. Donna Simon is Bariatric Coordinator and Nutrition Specialist at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona.

Donna Simon, M.S., R.D.:
You need to have the support of your family. Get them involved. Get them to eat healthier.

Like I tell my patients, you don’t need to have the cookies and the cakes or the candies in the house for the children or the grandchildren.

Let them start eating healthier. Have cut up fruits and vegetables, grapes in the freezer are a great treat for kids. They are great for a bariatric patient.

So I mean, have the family start eating healthier. Start eating with the small dinner plates and instead of your big dinner plates.

I mean that’s just family wise, so once your family gets on board with you and sees you are eating healthier, you are trying to improve your life, they will help and do the same, especially the kids, they will become so proud of you, all right?

I can use it from a personal experience. My son is so proud of my husband since he lost the weight. He has lost 120 pounds, all right?

He is five years post-op, okay? It’s hard when you live with the food police but I mean he does it but my son is a great supporter of it.

So I mean family support is so important. You really need to get on board.
