Bariatric Surgery: Do More Women Have This Procedure? - Dr. Podkameni

All over the country, women do get more bariatric surgery than men. One of the reasons we think is because women do take care of themselves better than men. They seek medical attention faster than men and overall they take care better of their health.

The trend is changing a bit in terms of men also taking care of their obesity problem, but women do take care of their obesity problem initially first, and better than men.

Here at Banner Gateway for instance, we have 70% of our patients being women and from that, I can tell you that if you get a patient whose BMI is between 45 or above 45, between 45 and 50, usually if they have a LAP-BAND® for instance, which is usually what the patients ask us to do, not that it’s the best procedure but that’s what sometimes they ask us to do, they can expect over a period of two years to lose about 60-70% of their excess weight.

If they choose to have a band, or if they choose to have a bypass as opposed to a band, or if they choose to have a sleeve gastrectomy, probably the weight loss is faster. Over a period of six months to one year their excess weight is usually around 60-65% of the excess weight loss and over a course of two years they will reach about 70% of their excess weight loss.

After that point they will maintain their weight loss. The band patients, they will continue to keep their weight loss for between 55-60% and the gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy patients, they will keep their weight loss around between 60-70%.
