As I was scrolling through social media the other day, Miley Cyrus posted a picture of her in Southern Utah. For some reason I started reading the comments are people were writing things like, “Girl too skinny”, “Are you okay? You look too skinny”, “Eat something!!”

This isn’t the first time I have seen people comment on influencer’s or celebs’ weight. It really struck a nerve with me. Why are people so obsessed with body image? Women comment all the time on someone being too skinny, too fat, too muscular, ect… It is ridiculous.

I feel like asking, “Well, what SHOULD this person look like? What is the perfect body and why do you feel this person needs to look a certain way?” Maybe they are happy just the way they are or maybe they are battling certain health issues that they don’t plaster all over the internet.

For me and a lot of other people, our social media accounts show the best version of ourselves.

One time someone commented on one of my pictures that I was too skinny. Yes, I was too skinny.

What they didn’t know was that I was recovering from a stomach illness and had crippling anxiety that was causing me to lose my appetite. I was working with doctors and a therapist. I had a ton of professional and family support.

You never know what someone might be struggling with or not behind the curtain of social media.

Most people have friends and family that love them and would call them out in private if they were concerned. When people comment on weight via social media it doesn’t come off as caring or concerned, it comes off as malicious. It also offers zero solution and the negativity sticks with the person for a long time.

If you must comment…

Before commenting or sending a private message about someone’s weight, ask yourself, “What is my intention?” Think deeply about this. How is this going to make an impact?

And that is my rant for today.
