Reva explains if she felt open to all available treatment options for postpartum depression/PPD.

Reva:
Well, in terms of treatment options, at the beginning, like many women who suffer from postpartum depression, I didn’t really want, I was very apprehensive to take medication. A lot of that has to do with the fact that as a woman who just had a child, you believe that this should be the happiest time of your life and when it’s not, it’s kind of a very sad process to think that you would have to take medication, you know, to kind of restore that.

And so I was very apprehensive, and I wanted to focus on alternative medicine and kind of, I guess, get my nutrition, and I also wasn’t sleeping because I was employed at a job where I worked like kind of strange hours, from 3:00 in the morning to 8:00 in the morning. So, I wanted to kind of focus on getting, you know, my sleep schedule back, focus on exercise, and kind of like naturopathic medicine and then give myself a timeframe for that to work, and if it didn’t work within those parameters, then switch to a more traditional treatment like an antidepressant. And that’s where I am at now.

I think that there is a lot of misinformation that is given in terms of, almost a stigma that people are given that, you know, take antidepressants or that admit that they do have a problem that’s beyond their control. And I think that women should just be reassured that it’s not their fault that they have postpartum depression. It is not something that they necessarily could have prevented or even stopped. There’s a lot of hormonal changes that take place during the course of pregnancy and then after childbirth.

So I think that, just recognizing that, that it is a physical, you know, condition, and that it is, you know, your brain chemistry that is kind of not behaving properly. I guess that is a huge hurdle to kind of wrap your mind around, but once you are at that point, you know, there is healing and there is treatment available. It just might take a little while to get there.
