Dr. Siris describes how osteoporosis is detected.
Dr. Siris:
Osteoporosis is detected in one of two ways. Either you’ve had a fracture of the hip or of one of the bones of your spine, so called vertebral fracture, we consider that to be a clinical diagnosis of osteoporosis. In fact, if you’re someone over 50 and you break your wrist or your rib or any number of other bones, clinically you have higher risk for fractures and really that’s osteoporosis.
