Early Pregnancy Back Pain: Causes and Treatment Options

By July 31, 2023 - 2:11am

One of the most common concerns among pregnant women is back pain! Back pain affects around half to three-quarters of all pregnant women.

Causes of back pain in the later stages of pregnancy are easier to identify. But what causes back pain in the first trimester?

Causes of back pain during early pregnancy
Early pregnancy
Back pain during pregnancy can be caused by a variety of factors. It's an early symptom of pregnancy for some women, and there could be several causes. So, schedule an appointment with your doctor.

Hormone increase
During pregnancy, your body produces hormones that aid in the softening and loosening of ligaments and joints in your pelvis. This is vital for your baby's delivery later in your pregnancy. However, hormones do not only act in your pelvis. They go throughout your body, impacting every joint. This weakening and loosening might directly impact your back throughout the first trimester of your pregnancy. This is frequently manifested as aches and pains.

Stress
Back pain can be exacerbated by stress, whether or not you are pregnant. Stress aggravates muscle soreness and tightness, especially in weak areas. If hormones are already wreaking havoc on your joints and ligaments, a little anxiety about your job, family, pregnancy, or anything else can hurt your back even more.

Second and third trimesters
Other variables may come into play to aggravate your stiff back while you are pregnant.

Shifting center of gravity
Your center of gravity shifts forward as your tummy grows larger. This can result in posture alterations that affect how you sit, stand, move, and sleep. Bad posture, prolonged standing, and bending over can all cause or worsen back discomfort.

Weight gain
Your back must also support your baby's developing weight, which can put a strain on the muscles. Back discomfort is virtually certain when bad posture is present.

Women who are overweight or have had back pain before getting pregnant are more likely to experience back pain during their pregnancy.

Treatment for early back pain during pregnancy
There are several techniques for pregnancy back pain relief, no matter at what stage you are. You won't be able to prevent it, but you can help to reduce the agony. Follow these suggestions for decreasing back pain during pregnancy.
1. Maintain good posture, whether you're sitting or standing. Stand up straight, chest high, and shoulders back and relaxed.
2. Avoid standing for extended periods. If you're always on your feet, try resting one foot on an elevated surface.
3. Remember to squat instead of bending at the waist while picking anything up.
4. No lifting of heavy objects.
5. Wear sensible, supportive shoes.
6. Sleep on your side rather than your back, with pillows tucked behind your belly and between your knees for soft support.
7. Pregnancy-safe workouts to strengthen and support your abdominal and back are recommended.
8. Consider wearing a supporting garment or belt as your abdomen grows to relieve some of the pressure on your back.
9. Learn more about how an adjustment can help relieve back discomfort by researching local chiropractors who specialize in pregnancy-related care.
10. When seated, attempt to raise your feet and ensure that your chair provides adequate back support. For extra low back support, use a lumbar pillow.
11. Make an effort to get lots of rest.

Meditation, prenatal yoga, and extra rest can all help you control your stress levels if your back discomfort appears to be related to your stress levels.

Back pain can be relieved with ice packs, and prenatal massages can be quite calming and comforting. If your back pain is severe, consult your doctor about anti-inflammatory drugs. You should not take any medication without first getting permission from your doctor.

When to contact your doctor
Back pain is a common occurrence during pregnancy. However, it might be a warning of more serious issues, such as preterm delivery or a urinary tract infection, in some situations.

Back pain coupled with fever, urination burning, or vaginal bleeding should not be overlooked. If you see any of these symptoms, call your doctor straight away.
