Janet describes her immediate reaction when she learned of her glaucoma diagnosis.
Janet:
Hi, my name is Janet. I am a patient of Dr. Aleta Gong’s. I have been a patient of hers for quite a few years and right now I am dealing with glaucoma for one year.
So it’s a year in March that I came to visit her and had an appointment. I had redness of the eyes and they were dry, irritated and I could see a little shaded area and so I thought it was the beginning of a cataract, but I came in and Dr. Gong dilated my eyes, gave me filled, a vision field test and said, “No, it’s glaucoma.”
When I was diagnosed with glaucoma I was concerned because I knew that it could cause blindness. My father, his mother, and my sister all had glaucoma. Since I have found out that it is hereditary and so if you have family members that have glaucoma, by the time you reach age 40 you definitely need to start seeing an eye doctor and get those tests and be checked.
But, Dr. Gong told me that as long as I would take the eye drops we should be able to get the pressures down. Now when I came in they were in the 20s, which is high, and within a week she checked again and they were down to 17-19, and then several months later she checked again and they had dropped to 14 and 15 and she said that was excellent. So she said just continue to take the eye drops and my eyes get tired and they’d feel dry, but I do computer work all day and she said I have to be aware and use other eye drops just to keep them moist and to remember to blink.
She said sometimes watching TV or a computer screen we can forget to blink often enough and that causes dryness anyway. So other than that, I don’t have any difficulties or problems with it.
