Dr. Berkus explains if a woman with an eating disorder is able to treat herself.

Dr. Berkus:
No, I don’t even have to think about that answer. One of the things that we know about people with eating disorders is that they don’t have a sense of self or a sense of what exactly they are feeling versus what sensations their body is having and so, someone with an eating disorder may not know if they are hungry or if they are full, as opposed to are they angry; are they sad?

So what we need to do is have professionals that are trained in the area to be able to diagnose, number one, medical problems. And number two, those psychiatric concerns that lead to poor choices and behaviors that aren’t healthy.
