Vaginal steaming is an all natural remedy believed to aid with cramps, bloating and cleansing and regulating menstruation. This old-timey practice has increased in popularity recently leaving many curious about its proposed benefits. After everything your vagina has to endure, a little pampering can go a long way. But is vaginal steaming worth all of the trouble? Before running the risk of an expensive spa day, or a potential allergic reaction or skin irritation in one of the most uncomfortable places, consider the information below.
How does vaginal steaming work?
The process of vaginal steaming is rather simple yet potentially uncomfortable if attempted on your own. While squatting over a container, herb-infused steam is directed into your vagina for 20 to 60 minutes. Some herbs used for steaming may include Mugwort, Wormwood, Chamomile, Calendula, Basil and Oregano. Treatments are offered at some spas for quite a pretty penny, but there are ways to try this at home as well. Although many doctors advise against attempting this treatment at home, below is a suggested method. Be sure to research the possible health and safety concerns associated with this method and the potential side effects of the herbs you choose:
1. Add 1cup of herb to a basin of hot water
2. Let mixture steep 1-3 minutes
3. Remove clothing from the waist down
4. Stand or squat over the basin. You may place your basin inside a toilet or other container for more comfort.
5. Wrap a towel around your legs and waist to trap steam under you.
What does it do?
Vaginal steaming is generally used to clean the vagina, uterus and the reproductive tract. Other benefits are believed to be the alleviation of stress, depression, hemorrhoids, infections, infertility, headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, hormone imbalances and generalized pain. Other benefits associated with heat therapy could be included.
Does it work?
Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence to support the act of vaginal steaming. Many of the herbs used for this practice may hold some health benefits, but to expect steam to penetrate the vaginal tissue strongly enough to alter hormones and improve fertility is a little far fetched. The only known benefit would come from the use of heat on the body, which can also be rendered through heating pads and things of the sort. Even still, the popularity of vaginal steaming is still on the rise.

Thank you for this post!
I think the reason these kinds of treatments are popular is due to the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow espousing all sorts of therapies that have no basis in health and science (and no basis in reality at times!).
There is no benefit to vaginal steaming other than a possible method of relaxation (if that's your thing). To me, it's one more obsession over women's vaginas and making women feel they are dirty or "less than" if they aren't constantly cleaning themselves.
