Mshienie,
Support groups are wonderful. Like Expwoman said, it is so freeing and such a relief to be with other people who understand everything you are going through. Whether it's a good day or a bad day, they understand. They have dealt with the same habits and problems and issues. You realize that you are just a person and that every person has some problems and this is just the one you have. In a way it becomes easier to deal with because you are seeing yourself as a person first. Does that make sense?
Would you like EmpowHer to try to help you find some support groups in your area? Just give us your zip code or your city and state and we'll be glad to see what we can find for you.

mshienie--the support group was really helpful. It was a relief to be with people who understood what I was experiencing and I learned so much about how to deal with the anxiety.

Hi mshienie,
April 2, 2010 - 9:42amI too have struggled with intrusive thoughts. Therapy with a cognitive behavioral therapist who specializes in ocd has made all the difference, plus I take an antidepressant, and have gone to an ocd support group. Many people who suffer from ocd hide it from others, and being alone is really painful. The book on Freedom from ocd by Jonathan Grayson really helped me--maybe you could get it at the library. Also, check out the International OCD Foundation--they have lots of good information. All the best,
Expwoman

Hi, Mshienie,
You are not alone. It is estimated that between 4 and 10 million people in the United States deal with obsessive-compulsive disorder and the thoughts that go along with it. So don't feel that you have to figure this out all by yourself, OK?
I'm glad that you are finding books, reading them and doing exercises to try to help yourself. That is awesome! At EmpowHer, we are all about women helping one another to find solutions and information about their own bodies, minds and healthcare. By trying to help yourself, you are taking important steps.
