The only thing worse then being sick is having to go to the doctor because you're sick. I hate going to the doctor. Who does? Basically, nobody wants to see the doctor and we always wait until we are on our death bed to do so. Then there is health care costs and don't even get me started on that. Well, did you know physically fit men (people) have less frequent visits to their doctor, according to a study down by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). By enhancing health with physical activity, experts say the frequency of utilizing the health care system is likely reduced, creating a cost savings in both public and private sectors.
Here is the scoop on the study:
Between 1970 and 1989, each participant underwent two examinations at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas, which included a complete physical examination, exercise treadmill test, a survey to determine health risks, lifestyle, family history and other illnesses and a questionnaire which asked individuals to assess the number of visits to their physician in a one-year period. Based on their fitness characteristics, the men were divided into classifications ranging from least to most fit.
Those in the most-fit group were less likely to visit their doctor or require medical treatments, while the incidence of medical treatments increased in the least-fit group. Further, men who improved their fitness had a reduction in overnight hospital stays.
Even though this study was done on men, the study shows that no matter what it's important for us to stay physically fit. Dr. Ted Mitchell was quoted saying that this could lead to a 50% reduction in health care costs if we all got on the health and fitness band wagon. So, if you're like most of the population and hate seeing the doctor, get fit! Make your last appointment and ask your doctor what is the right physically fit program for you.
