Q:

When does a child need to see a doctor for flu?

my pre-kindergartner has flu like symtoms, (low grade fever, weak, runny nose, fatigue),

She was vomiting but that's over now and she is drinking water and juices as well as oatmeal and apple sauce, breads or anything easy to keep down.

I know there is no 'cure' for flu so she is getting plenty of fluids and rest. We are on day 3. When is it time to bring her in, does anyone have opinions?

When is the time to bring her in? I assume you meant to the pediatrician, correct? I guess it all depends on your kid's doctor. From what you describe, your daughter is getting better and more than likely it was a viral type of cold. Certain flu-like viral infections could last more than a week! If her low grade fever is still present it would not hurt to call the doctor and ask the triage nurse whether or not is time to bring her in.

Children need to be closely monitored for "how they are acting" during an episode of illness more than specific symptoms such as fever. But if vomiting has continued, your child may be getting dehydrated and it could be the reason why she is experiencing fatigue too. In addition to juices, you may want to give her an electrolyte drink to replace the minerals she may be losing due to the vomiting and keeping up with the fight between her immune system and the germs (virus).

In same cases, a viral infection can turn into a bacterial one and antibiotics might be needed to help fight it, but this will be up to your pediatrician of course. I personally kept my children away from antibiotics by providing their bodies with natural re-inforcements including electrolyte drinks, a product called "EmergenC" which protects kids from colds and/or flu germs that are around in every classroom.

Hope this helps!
