This is my second hip replacement (I did not limp after the first surgery 5 years ago (right hip). The second surgery was Sept. 08 and I am still limping. I work out in the water two days a week, ride a recumbent bike three days a week for 20 minutes at 12 mph and swing dance two nights a week. I have been exercising since Nov. except I started swing dancing June 09. I like exercising in the therapy pool and need some exercises that will strengthen my gluteus medius and ITB. Any ideas?

Hi, Yolanda, and welcome to EmpowHer! Thanks so much for your question.

You are a wonderfully active person!! I'm so sorry you've had trouble with a limp since your second surgery. Do you have pain as well, or just the limp? Has your doctor given you any theory as to why you are limping after this surgery when you didn't after your first surgery? Did you have physical therapy and/or conditioning exercises after your surgery?

Here's a page of exercises meant to strengthen different muscles in the body after a hip replacement:

And this page doesn't list specific muscles, but I imagine that you can envision these water exercises and isolate which of them might benefit you:

Here is one exercise that would strengthen your gluteus medius, but it is done on land, not in water. However, as I read through it, it seems that it would be possible to do it in the shallow end of the pool as you touch the wall. See what you think:

Does any of this help? Be sure to ask your doctor or physical therapist if these exercises are in line with whatever physical conditioning program they have approved for you. We'd hate to undo any of the great work you've already done!
