I know the age you go through menopause is different for all women, but what is the average age women begin menopause at? Why do some women go through menopause earlier than other?

Hi Carrie, and thanks for your question.
According to the National Institute on Aging, the average age of a woman having her last period, menopause, is 51. Generally most women will reach menopause in their 40's and 50"s, but it can vary.
The age varies for a number of reasons, including a woman's overall health and lifestyle. Smoking, for example, can lead to early menopause. Women who have hysterectomies, surgery which removes the uterus, will make periods stop.
We have an entire section of the EmpowHER site that's dedicated to menopause information which you may find helpful. If you haven't found it yet, here's the link - let us know what you think!
