Nasty Cough...How do you stop it?

Help... Uncontrollable Coughing Attacks...

I was having coffee with a dear friend of mine on Thursday. We were having a great conversation and then all of sudden, she starts to cough and it goes from bad to worse. She proceeds to get up to get some water and continues to cough. I'm not sure what to do....her eyes start watering and you can tell she feels very uncomfortable because she can't stop coughing. And then, people were starting to look at her to see if she was okay, which only made matters worse.

Believe it or not, she is the fourth woman I know who has had this uncontrollable cough. They can cough for up to 10 minutes or longer. They don't know when it's going to hit and they're never prepared.

They say it's allergies but I'm not sure. My girlfriend, well, the doctor wanted to give her cough medicine with codeine in it, which she won't take. He also gave her a steroid inhaler. Clearly it's not helping.

-Do you have a BAD COUGH that you can't control?

-Did you find a solution? Were you able to get rid of it?

-If so, how?

Thanks so much for your help and advice. My girlfriends will be forever grateful. One of my friends doesn't want to leave her house anymore, because she never knows when it's going to hit her and she gets so embarrassed. Everyone rushes to her side to help her and I think it makes her cough all the more.

There have been times when I've swallowed the wrong way while drinking something, even just water, and it took some time to stop coughing. I've not had it last as long as 10 minutes, but I can imagine how frustrating that might be. I wonder if there's some kind of muscle spasm involved.
