A friend of mine suggested taking Maca (Femenessence) for perimenopause symptoms, specifically hot flashes and weight gain. She has had great results. I'm concerned because I am wondering if it is safe, especially since I take synthroid for hypothyroidism?
Any information is appreciated! Thank you!

Hello Pimitarr,
Do not take this product or any other herbal remedy without first consulting your physician.
Femmenessence is made from a Peruvian herb called maca. I could not find any information about this product, except from websites which sell it. This alone makes me suspicious.
I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism as a result of radiation therapy for brain cancer. I take a daily dose of Synthroid and would never consider taking any supplements without consulting my physician.

Thank you! I am very hesitant to take anything - I appreciate your advice. I'm going to see my doctor in two weeks and I will be sure to bring it up. Thanks again!

Dear Pimitarr,
March 22, 2014 - 4:53pmI definitely agree with talking to your doctor about using Femmenessence, however can I also suggest sending an email to our medical team ([email protected]) or calling them 415 243 9991 and speaking to one of our doctors. They can speak to you and your doctor if you would like as we have many women using Femmenessence with synthroid. In fact, Femmenessence, which works through the Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal axis, often supports thyroid function and they can talk to you about that. As for Femmenessence credibility this is a link to our five years of research published in medical journals which includes, pharmacology, toxicology and human double blind, placebo controlled clinical trials http://www.naturalhi.com/published-articles/ there is also a list of our medical team which includes some of the top practitioners in integrative medicine http://www.naturalhi.com/medical-team/
