Q:

Is it normal to have a period after 5 years of not having one?

I haven't had a period for 5 years and I have suddenly started bleeding again. I also have cirrhosis of the liver due to being alcohol dependent but no longer drink alcohol and haven't for 2 years. I read that cirrhosis can cause early menapause so just thought my periods had stopped because of my condition. Suddenly I have started having my period again. Is this cause for concern?

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

Your liver issues aside, all bleeding after menopause needs to be checked out as this is not normal. You may have some sort of reproductive concern - please contact your doctor.
