How safe is it for me to have a child after having brain surgery 2.5 years ago?

i too had a low grade glioma removed 3 years ago, unfortunately this lead to a infection in my frontal lobe bone a week after surgery so i had to have the whole of my frontal lobe bone removed to remove all infection, heamorage, bleeding etc. i had a titanium plate inserted in my forehead and frontal lobe area. i feel i have recovered as much as i can, still taking citalopram 30mg per day and keppra for epilepsy 500mg per day inc painkillers for occasional head aches and pains. I am now wanting to try for my 1st baby in November. However i am unsure if my body maybe capable of it? - may sound naive but the labour scares the wits out of me, pains and trauma. I would like someone to advise me on things please....

I know absolutely nothing about your medical situation, but can tell you that childbirth and pregnancy can be no big deal for lots of people! It's a big deal, but labor and delivery were NOT bad for me. Oh there was pain, but I could take it....didn't even have an epidural for one kid! (too late) I didn't like pregnancy, as I never felt good. But delivery is over so quick, that I'd go through labor & delivery 7 times before I would be preg again once. But so many girls I know have NO problem being preg. You might do great with both! Do not worry! Labor & delivery is not as bad as it sounds, for most people. It's just the unknown, I think. As my dear departed Mother told me (she had 5 kids): If it were so awful, women wouldn't keep doing it. : )

well i have discharged now from the epilepsy in patient clinic due to no seizures for over 2 years. i was advised by my epilepsy nurse i have to come off anti depressents (currently replacing seretonin levels in my brain). i feel fine, just still suffer head pains and get tired but i suppose that's the joy of having a 1/4 of my brain removed and fronta lobe bone!! not been to GP's yet but i know i have to gently come off anti - depressants slowly and then swap anti seizure drugs to another kind?

Hi,
Can you tell us what your doctor has advised, as far as conceiving? Have you talked with him/her about the side effects of medication on a pregnancy, and how your recovery process is going?

This is such a case-by-case basis, that we are unable to tell you specifically if your body is recovered enough, but we can help you understand any information that your doctor has provided if it is unclear.
