Have you had experience with the Wiley Protocol?

Has anyone had experience using the Wiley Protocol of hormone replacement therapy?

It is a method where bioidentical hormones are prescribed and are given transdermally -- through the skin -- in a patent-pending cream. A primary

difference between this protocol and some others is that the hormonal levels rise and fall, similar to the way a woman's normal cycle did when she was still menstruating.

There is some controversy on the web about T.S. Wiley's qualifications for developing a medical protocol, since she is not a doctor herself, she studied anthropology (though she co-authored the book "Sex, Lies, and Menopause" with Julie Taguchi, M.D.)

Some women claim wonderful results; others claim very troubling side effects. Does anyone out there have personal experiences to share?

Thanks for that. I asked for it earlier but no one would answer me. Here is the entire excerpt that you quoted, just so it can be taken in context:

(Discovery Magazine)"Don’t we need clinical trials to gauge the safety of these therapies?"
(Suzanne Somers) "Yeah. But you’re talking here to a 60-year-old woman. What do you want me to do? Wait till I’m 80? I’m feeling good. What they have to offer me, I know is dangerous. But I also know that it’s an exact fit, synthesized to exactly replicate what my body once made. You must understand, I don’t advocate Wiley. I don’t even get my hormones from her. I don’t advocate anybody. In Ageless, I just laid out different ways to do it. I’m not a doctor, so I can’t tell you what’s the best way to do it. Clinical trials take 10 to 20 years, and there are those of use who are in desperate need, caught in this void—my age group. These are the dice I’m rolling. I don’t want to fall into a life of sleeplessness and sexlessness and illness and depression and all the diseases that are byproducts of the loss of hormones. I’m willing to take a risk. I don’t consider bioidentical hormones anywhere near the risk of taking a, quote, “dangerous, harmful, even fatal” synthetic hormone. You couldn’t pry my mouth open to put a synthetic hormone in me."

Deb V. get YOUR facts straight. I am a lay person, new to this controversy. I am not a propoganda generator so quit addressing me as if I work for T.S. Wiley or I stand to gain somehow in an argument with you. This site and the question posed that started this whole thread is about women's health issues. I was genuinely interested in what you are doing for YOUR health not for women's health in general.

As for Caren being a real estate rep, good for her! A couple of my co-workers have their real estate licenses too, but they are working with me in the vacation industry right now and are also specialists in that field because of their experience. I liked that Caren was interested in ME and not guarded or spiteful toward me like you are, and wanted to know how I was doing and knew the questions I needed to ask myself. My mom is a retired opthalmic nurse, but that doesn't mean she's not a parenting specialist that I highly sought for advice on parenting when my kids were little or even cooking or how to deal with my husband or moodiness or all the other advice that I sought from her and still seek. Here on this thread, we are seeking thoughts and advice from each other as women about our health issues. Someone posed the question about those who've had experience with The Wiley Protocol. I answered first, and then after I was attacked for sharing something positive, I responded with a passion because that's how I feel about this protocol that has been life changing for me. The record, as you said earlier, speaks for itself. I've registered at this site and am a REAL PERSON with a real name, and a real life apart from combing through threads on the internet to spread negativity about some medical protocol. I've shared my personal information. I'm genuinely interested in everyone else's experiences, including yours.

Great answer, NanaShana, heartfelt and well thought-out and backed-up. Thank you for sharing your experience (I was the original question-asker, and have also been interested in everyone's experience, good and bad and in between). Sometimes topics stir up multiple levels of people's emotions, and this one surely has. But we are all women with different experiences, and I would hope that we can show each other respect without demanding agreement.

Thanks for writing again. I very much appreciate your point of view.

FYI, getting facts straight does not mean making a guess from what you see on a video. The foil bags you see are used by hundreds of compounding pharmacies not affiliated with Wiley. Wiley got the idea for the bags from THEM.

Suzanne Somers has broken all ties with Wiley since the ethical scandal, and has gone on record as not using the protocol. Wiley's husband concurs in Wikipedia, saying:

In the December 2007 issue of Discover magazine, Somers said, "I don't advocate Wiley. I don't get my hormones from her."

And by the way, the Caren you spoke to as a Wiley rep is a real estate agent, not a hormone specialist.

I guess we should all get our facts straight. On Oprah Winfrey's website is an excerpt from a recent Oprah show which where Suzanne Somers was a guest talking about the Bio-identical hormone debate:

Here is more of the show, expanded to show that Suzanne is still using the Wiley Protocol. You'll notice when she shows her daily routine, she brings out the familiar green and purple foil pouches with the pre-measured bio-identical estrogen and progesterone syringes in them:

I'm wondering why you never answer any of my questions Anonymous? You keep crying foul when it comes to the founder of the Wiley Protocol, but you haven't offered any superior alternatives to the protocol itself. You haven't offered any personal information. Where do you live. How old are you. Do you have any children? What kind of health issues are you facing/have you faced? What are you doing for your female health?

BTW, I've finally spoken with someone with the Wiley Protocol thanks to you. Her name is Caren and she flat out told me that this protocol is not for everyone. She agreed that there are definitely critics and that it is controversial. Rather than waste any more time on that, they choose to focus their efforts and attention to the thousands of patients, doctors and pharmacies who are using/prescribing/dispensing the protocol. In fact, she was more interested in how I was doing and if there was anything she could do for me. I was blown away by her thoughtfulness and feel even better about using this. I'm not saying that I'm not open to any alternatives because I am always interested in the latest medical research and breakthroughs. I'm in the fight of my life (FOR my life) and my health here. I'm going to stay as healthy as I can for as long as I can.

This is a familiar Wiley propaganda refrain in response to first-hand criticism. "Well, just what are *you* doing for women's health?" They've been playing this card for a long time.

The notion is... Well, do they expect that women failed by the Wiley Protocol are thereby somehow obligated to go out and find some way of their own to advance women's health? I guess to actually change their careers. Otherwise shut up and go away. And obligated for what reason? In order to atone for their sin in trusting T.S. Wiley? For choosing this protocol? To help make up for Wiley's faults in advancing women's health?

The Wiley Protocol failure reports keep rolling in. I doubt the Wileys are aware of the extent to which their thought experiment is failing.

I'm surprised that Nana would think 30 separate legal actions against the Wileys were no big thing.

Would anybody get their medical information from somebody they wouldn't by a used car from?

You need to start getting get your facts straight and not accept the Wileys' party line that there are only a handful of critics out there with a "vendetta." I am NOT affiliated with wileywatch.org or rhythmicliving.org. Wiley likes to say there are only two or three people for whom the protocol didn't work so she can diffuse criticism by the majority of women who have become so sick.

Wiley's husband put up an online message board for Wiley Protocol users called, NOT RHYTHMIC LIVING. But too many of the WIley Protocols users complained of bleeding, depression, weight gain and hypothyroidism that Wiley's husband took it off the internet because the anti-testimonials were bad for business.

And here's another fact you got wrong. There was no hidden camera. Is that what Wiley is telling people now? Wiley consented to being filmed as did all the women in the room who have now stopped the Wiley Protocol.

Wiley was compelling at first and a lot of us were fooled. Not being from Santa Barbara, we were not aware that she was known as a charismatic CULT figure out there and there were many legal actions against her in the Santa Barbara court records. You can check this yourself.

She wrote a book which sounded credible until you check the wacky footnotes. She had an answer for everything, even for women who lost one third of their hair on the Protocol. Even Suzanne Somers was fooled for a while. We all left, hoping others would not so easily fooled.

I've never spoken with anyone affiliated with Wiley, but after reading through all of your responses and going through those two websites, I'll be contacting them today.

As for the video, I only assumed the camera was hidden because of the angle and poor quality. I'm glad to know that everyone consented to the taping. How do you know so much about it?

As for the lawsuits, in this thread it's been implied that they were related to women who used the protocol, however it sounds like they are all local to their county and financially related, and not lawsuits, but just legal actions taken against them such as a landlord demanding payment.

Amanda8, your profile is very vague and you have been so defensive and angry that I can only assume that you've been hurt by them. How did you get started with the protocol in the first place? What is your story? And what are you doing now for your female health?

The camera angle was straight on and the video quality isn't what I would expect anyone to describe as poor quality, unless maybe it's expected that it was intended for IMAX.

So from those videos, you assume it was a hidden camera? Did you miss the part where T.S. Wiley directly addressed the camera?

January 4, 2010 - 3:31am

You know, you people are so obsessed with discrediting this protocol that it's laughable. You are doing the very thing you accuse the Wiley people of doing! You are compelled to post a negative for very positive on this thread. And you ARE trying to discredit my personal experience. Comparing me to a happy but naive Pinto owner? Of all the absurdities. Why don't you use your angry energy to fight REAL health threats that are actually killing women like YAZ and the like?
