We've all heard the old wives tales about microwaves...."don't stare into the microwave, you'll go blind" or "your microwave will give you cancer if you stand too close to it" but is there any truth to it?
Are our microwaves bad for our health? Can they actually cause cancer or increase our risk of cancer?
Would love to "heat" up some discussion around this!

Hello Kenzie,
You chose a good topic to "heat" up the conversation.
There are different types of radiation. Microwave ovens do not make food radioactive, but simply heat food by producing radiation which is absorbed by water molecules in the food. This makes the water molecules vibrate and produce heat, which cooks the food.
On the other hand, ionising radiation is made of high energy waves. The energy produced can get into cells and damage DNA. This can lead to cancer.
