I have been taking a 12.5 dose of coumadin for 11 years due to a pulmonary embolism and due to a blood disorder(anti-phosolipid deficiency) will the rest of my life. For the past year I have also been taking 1000 mg of Salmon Oil and Reversatrol supplements.
Should I continue this regime? I have not noticed any side effects. My pt and inr is what the drs. want it to be around 2.5.
Thank you.

When my mom recently had to go to the ER for a bloody nose (dry nasal passage and broken blood vessel due to stress from allergies), the doctor warned her that the fish oil supplement she was taking is a blood thinner. We didn't know that! We're going to stick to fresh salmon and flax seed oil for the Omega-3 fatty acids.
I would certainly double check with your doctor about taking fish oil.
Take good care of yourself and please stay in touch with us.

Thanks for the follow up Tina. I actually learned of Resversatrol from Dr. Manny on one of the major morning TV networks and an interview from Oprah Windfrey. My MD said if my pt is ok is should not worry. I have since read in medical journals that it still may cause me to bleed unnecessaily. While not maybe increasing the thiness of my blood I have heard that fish oil acts like WD40 in helping my blood vessels.

Thanks so much for the response. PE is no fun believe me.

Hey there anon, Thanks for writing and good question. I'm happy to hear that your numbers are where your doctors want them to be.
With regard to the salmon oil, an article from the Mayo Clinic states some fish oils can interfere with the effectiveness of Warfarin (Coumadin). Did your doctor recommend the supplements along with your medication? How did you learn of these particular supplements for your condition? To find out what other medications and food can interfere with Coumadin click here.
In the meantime, we have submitted your question to one of our top experts and hope to have an answer for you in the next few days. Take care.
