Dr. Raiszadeh discusses the most common questions patients have about O-arm® technology.

Often times when I see patients in the office they have very legitimate concerns about surgery. Now, surgery, especially for spine patients, carry significant risk. If the screws are placed in the wrong position; if the implants are placed in the wrong position you may have to go back to the operating room to revise it. So we have come up with different technology and the scientists and engineers have come up with different technology to allow us to place these screws and put these rods and put these cages in appropriate position that allows us to be as accurate as humanly possible.
With the advent of the O-arm® this allows us to do so and so during these surgeries, during the lumbar surgeries, during the mid-back surgeries and sometimes even during the neck surgeries for the fusion, which is called anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, for the thoracic cases, which are thoracic disc herniations or thoracic corpectomies or thoracic fusions for fractured disc locations, and even lumbar problems. If they have a degenerative spondylolisthesis, stenosis, instability, we use the O-arm® to allow us to direct and target that part of the spine that needs to be decompressed or stabilized. And a very legitimate concern for patients is, “Well doctor, how, when you’re putting in there, how do you know that it’s going to be perfect?”
The O-arm® here allows us to do so and it’s an intraoperative CT scan, and a CT scan is the best form of scan that allows us to visualize the bony anatomy, as well as the implant anatomy to make sure it’s not pressing on any abhorrent structure i.e. specifically the nerves because if it’s pressing on the nerve and we don’t notice it during surgery, you have to go back to the operating room to take that screw out and revise it and replace it.
With the O-arm® we don’t have to do that. We have not had, thus far we’ve had a zero percent chance of re-visitism back to the OR to allow us to make us remove the screws because this allows us great accuracy with placement of all these screws.

He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he received the Paul Harrington Award for Research. He also completed a specialized internship and residency program at Baylor before achieving the highest level of medical education and fellowship training at the University of Texas Medical School.
