Dr. Audrey Tsao
Most patients who have hip replacement have symptoms of pain but they’re also describing patient’s problems with limitations in motion. “I can’t squat. I can’t kneel. If I get down to pick something off the floor I can’t get back up.” So motion limitations are a huge issue. Generally that patient will also describe a limp. “I can’t move my hip quite the way it is. My family is telling me that I’m limping and I don’t realize that I am limping.”

When you see me in the office I will do a physical examination but the primary test I will get is usually an x-ray and that x-ray can tell me how severe the arthritis is and where the arthritis is located, and often times if it is on both sides – the right and the left side. If the arthritis is potentially more than an osteoarthritic problem blood work can also be obtained and that can tell me the level of inflammation and whether or not you may have a different type of arthritis than osteoarthritis.

So when it’s been determined that a patient requires surgery, at the Banner Hospitals they are often times brought in for pre-operative testing that includes an EKG, a chest x-ray, a urine test and blood work. The Banner Hospitals then will walk the patient through the pre-operative testing process, as well as taking the initiative and letting them know where to go and where to report those tests to their particular physician. They will also then take care of getting those test results to the appropriate people for their surgical procedure.
