Bariatric patients that are successful frequently tell me that they are successful because they follow our guidelines.

They come to our support groups and they come to their follow-up visits with us in the clinic on a regular basis.

Additionally, preoperatively and post-operatively, I do remind the patients that they are a active participant in their weight loss process, that it’s not just the operation that’s going to make them lose weight.

But I call the operation a tool, and I tell the patients that just like with any tool they have to use it effectively and they have to understand how it works for them to be successful.

That’s one of the things that we make sure we have our patients understand before their surgery and after their operation.

And what we make sure that they understand even before their surgery is that their band is a tool and they have to use the tool effectively to be able to have a good outcome.

And so we teach them how it works and we teach them how to eat with their band so they could be as successful as possible postoperatively.
