Dr. Volkmar explains if Asperger's syndrome is a genetic condition.

Dr. Volkmar:
Asperger himself speculated, I mean, he speculated and he said that often the conditions seem to run in families. He speculated there was kind of familial basis that could be genetic, or it could be from learning in the environment. We need to do a lot more work, but it does look like there’s some very strong genetics to Asperger’s Syndrome and there is probably some connection to autism.

Fred Volkmar, M.D. is the director of the Yale University Child Study Center and Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Psychology at Yale University, where he heads the university's autism research and autism clinic. He is also Chief of Child Psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Hospital. His research focuses on understanding the fundamental nature of autism and developing better guidelines to diagnose autism and related conditions.
