Dr. Steinmann shares if arthritis is a hereditary condition.
Dr. Steinmann:
Arthritis is hereditary in the sense that osteoarthritis, it’s very common, that if a patient comes in and they have arthritis of the shoulder, their knee or their hip, and you do a family history as we always do at the Mayo Clinic when patients come to us, they’ll say, “Yes, my dad and my mom both had arthritis of their shoulder or their knee,” but I think it’s important to remember that just because you may have had a mother or father that had both hips replaced, both knees replaced, it doesn’t mean that you are going to develop that arthritis. It’s not a direct relationship.
You may be at a higher risk than the average individual, but I wouldn’t go around thinking or avoiding activities thinking that, “At age 60, I am going to have two total knees just like my mom did.” It just doesn’t correlate that way.

Dr. Scott P. Steinmann, M.D., is on orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center in Minnesota. Dr. Steinmann received his medical training from Cornell University Medical College in New York, completed his residency in orthopedics at New York Orthopedic Hospital and completed a fellowships focusing on the shoulder and hand surgery from Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine respectively.
