Dr. Berger explains the risks of oral therapy for acne.
Dr. Berger:
Most oral therapies that are prescribed for acne are relatively safe. So, oral antibiotics and oral contraceptives and Aldactone are three agents we use that have very high safety profile. They have been used for many-many years. Isotretinoin, which is a very powerful anti-acne drug, has a very potent teratogen, which can cause elevations of your liver function and may cause mood changes. That drug has to be carefully monitored. The other acne drugs are relatively safe.
