Dr. Goldstein explains why women should not rely on over-the-counter yeast infection treatments.

Dr. Goldstein:
Women frequently self-diagnose yeast infections based on the symptoms of itching and burning of the vulva. Unfortunately, when a woman has itching and burning in the vulva and even has cottagy cheesy discharge, she is very frequently, she very infrequently has a yeast infection. In fact, only about a third of the time when a woman has itching, burning, and cottagy cheesy discharge that she had an isolated yeast infection.

So I would encourage women to not use over-the-counter yeast preparations, even if they think they are sure that they have a yeast infection because, again, very frequently they don’t have a yeast infection.
