Dr. Georgiou explains how a woman can decrease her staph infection risk while in the hospital.
Dr. Georgiou:
If I was worried about having surgery and getting a staph infection what I would do is, I would ask the hospital whether or not you could have a conversation with the infection control unit, the head of nursing, or someone else who has access to the hospital’s data about how many infections, specifically staph infections, they have been facing and there is someone in the hospital that has that information and if you are an effective patient advocate you will get to the right person and have them at least give you a sense of whether it’s a frequent problem or an infrequent problem, and then you can start asking further questions after that.
Finding data on staph infections is generally not easily available on the Internet, but someone in the hospital has it on a spreadsheet because I am sure that they track it on a regular basis. It’s such a critical issue today.
