What are you doing for National Women's Health Week? Michelle King Robson, founder and CEO of EmpowHER offers tips on taking control of your health.

Did you know that May 8 thru May 14 is National Women’s Health Week?

Businesses, health organizations and government agencies from around the country are coming together to teach women how to advocate for their health.

One way of taking control of your health is through preventative screenings.

Hundreds of screenings like bone density tests and blood pressure checks are being offered around the country. To see a list of events in your area, visit EmpowHER.com/events.

Don’t want to wait for an event to come to you? The Centers for Disease Control says these small steps can make a big difference when it comes to your health:

· Learn how to read food labels: Nutrition plays such a large roll in our overall health. Be sure to understand how much sugar, sodium, protein and other products are in the food you eat.

· Do a regular skin check: Look for changes in the color, the size and borders of moles and keep an eye out for rashes and sores. Also, note if you experience other symptoms along with these changes such as fatigue or changes in weight. See something suspicious? Get to a doctor.

· And, know your numbers – Your Blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels, BMI and family history risks can help determine your risk for a heart attack or diabetes. Usually a few tests is all it may take to add years to your life.

And finally your phone can be your fitness friend. Did you know there are apps that measure your resting heart rate, record how many calories you eat and how many calories you burn exercising? And the best part is -- many of them are free or cost just a dollar or two – a small price to pay for taking control of your health.

Great information, Michelle! Thank you. It's always a great reminder to take better care of ourselves. Women commonly are the first ones to not take care of themselves and instead focus on everyone else in their families. It also may be a good idea for overall health and wellness to get some happiness in your life. Do what makes you feel good and inspires you or makes your heart feel lighter. I understand it can do wonders for your well-being.
Thank you for letting all of us be a part of your mission to promote strong and healthy women.
