7 Healthy Gift Ideas for Your Mom This Mother's Day

1) Mom's Breakfast

A nice mushroom omelet with melted cheese of Mom's choice makes a pretty presentation on a tray. For the brave chef, eggs Benedict says Special Occasion with elegance. For the cook with more enthusiasm than technique, scrambled eggs with bacon and sausages make a hearty fry-up. Add a cup of herbal tea or a smoothie in one corner of the tray, and a single rose nestled in the other. Daxiao Productions/Fotolia

2) Mom's Lunch

A shrimp stir fry with or without rice makes a nice companion piece to homemade vegetable soup or clam chowder. Or toss together cooked slices of beef, pork or lamb with spinach, rings of red onion, tomatoes and feta cheese. A chicken Caesar salad is great with or without croutons. Use real bacon bits. If you're feeding a crowd, putting together a healthy cheese, veggie and meat platter can fill the bill. The possibilities for healthy dips are endless, using ingredients like guacamole, hummus and sour cream. JackF/Fotolia

3) Mom's Dinner

If the weather is good (and maybe even if it's not) Mother's Day can be a great occasion to break out the barbecue. Steak, chicken, salmon and burgers are all tasty possibilities. Skewers with shrimp or beef or chicken combined with chunks of mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, onions and zucchini can be marinated beforehand if you prefer. Prefer to have things ready well in advance? A pot of chili, chicken cacciatore or lasagna can be made ahead of time. Monkey Business/Fotolia

4) Mom's Dessert

A healthy dessert doesn't have to be depressing. A cluster of grapes is a refreshing way to finish a meal. Want something a little less basic? Top off a great meal with peaches or raspberries and whipped cream in a sundae or parfait cup. Cut-up fruit takes on new life with a tasty sour cream or cream cheese dip. A low-carb cheesecake with strawberries is low on sugar and high on flavor. Alliance/Fotolia

5) Healthy House Plants

These house plants will improve the air in your mom's home. Buy her one every Mother's Day, or splurge and buy several at a time. Aloe vera, bamboo palms, English ivy, lady palms, peace lilies, philodendrons, rubber plants and spider plants are just a few of these beneficial plants. termis1983/Fotolia

6) Wee Pots of Herbs

Small containers of herbs can be kept outside in good weather and brought inside when it's bad. They don't have to take up much room, while they provide fresh seasoning and nutrients, and a wholesome feeling of being a bit of a gardener. Basil, chives, cilantro, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, tarrogan and thyme are all great herbs to tend and grow. glisic_albina/Fotolia

7) Rose Bushes

Are you a bit sentimental? Does Mom's house feel like it shelters your roots? A rose bush can be a touchstone even years after planting, so 10 years from now you can look at this plant and feel a pleasant nostalgia. Savor how much it has grown and has become a greater part of the landscape and your memories.
