When it comes to green living, there are many ways you can help the environment. You can recycle, buy compostable products, carry reusable shopping bags to stores and start composting in your backyard. But there's something you may be overlooking - your closet.

Making a few changes to the way you buy clothing can save you money and the environment. Here are a few ways to make your wardrobe a little greener.

1. Choose You Fabrics Wisely

 pay attention to fabric types

The type of fabric you wear can make a large impact on the environment. Sometimes a little research goes a long way! Why is that you ask? It takes a significant amount of energy to create synthetic fabrics (not to mention even more for production, processing and shipping!).

A few healthy fabric ingredients to keep an eye out for:

  • Bamboo
  • Organic cotton
  • Wool
  • Hemp

When in doubt, check the tag, it will always tell you what the garment is made out of.

2. Be Thrifty

Don’t ditch last season’s outfit — that’s not very sustainable. Repair clothing rather than tossing it. And if you must buy clothes, head over to your local thrift shop, because who doesn’t like to dig through a really good thrift store?

It’s a growing trend that’s extremely helpful to the environment. Not only does thrifting save money, but it also has become a way of life. It’s not uncommon to find new clothes (with tags still attached) next to a sweet 90’s boy band tee. Grab both for just a few bucks and don’t forget to head over to the flatware aisle for more secondhand must-haves.

Can’t locate your nearest thrift store? Plug in your zip code at TheThriftShopper.com and start digging!

3.  Buy From Environmentally-Friendly Labels

When you’re tired of the thrift store and want something new, choose brands that put the environment first. Did you know H&M has a “sustainable” search option?

Here are a few other eco-friendly brands we like:

4. Wash With Cold

Your detergent will clean your clothes in cold water just as well as warm or hot water. Not to mention, it won’t shrink your favorite shirt.

5. Donate Your Clothes

donate old clothes

Have a pile of clothes you won’t wear again? Make sure to donate your used clothing to the nearest second-hand store. Although some stores will pay for your gently-used clothing, beware of stores that only care about making money. It’s far better to donate to a good cause than make a dollar or two off of your old jeans.
