Nurse Practitioner Dale Ann Dorsey describes a urinary tract infection and explains the causes and symptoms.

Dale Ann Dorsey:
Well let me tell you a little bit about urinary tract infections. It is one of the most common reasons that I see people in my office.

There is about six million visits to a healthcare provider for urinary tract infections and about 20 percent of women at one point in their life will experience them.

The urinary tract infection can be in the urethra, it can be in the bladder or it can even ascend up into the kidneys. The most common is the bladder infection or what we call cystitis.

Some of the symptoms of that are urinary frequency, painful urination or a sudden urge to urinate. Often the urine may have a foul, strong odor and sometimes there may even be blood in the urine.

The number one cause of urinary tract infections is getting bacteria that usually lives in the intestines up into the urethra and it invades the bladder.

The symptoms are frequency of urination where you are just having to go to the bathroom many, many times than normal and that it may hurt, that you may have some pain when you are urinating.
