Dr. Eilber shares what she would tell a woman who thinks she has a urinary incontinence problem and is afraid to discuss it with her doctor.

Dr. Eilber:
I say that anything that bothers you enough, that impacts your lifestyle, you probably should discuss it with your doctor. And although it’s not necessarily a dinner conversation, fortunately in this time period we do tend to be a little more open, especially men are open with erectile dysfunction; women should be also more open with incontinence and other pelvic floor disorders.

For a woman who is embarrassed to see her doctor, I’d give her the statistics that one in nine women will probably have surgery for incontinence and prolapse in their lifetime. This is extremely common, and a lot of women do not seek help, not just because they are embarrassed, but because people believe it’s a normal part of aging. They also believe that nothing can be done about it.
