Dr. Mao explains which healing foods help prevent urinary system infections.

Dr. Mao:
Many women ask me what they can do to strengthen their urinary system, which includes the bladder, kidney, and the urinary tract. So I brought some food here that I think would really interest you because these very foods can be used both as a preventative as well as if you’re having a flare. So let's talk about these problems that you potentially could have.

Well, infections, bladder, urinary tract infection, kidney infection, very serious problem, not to mention the discomfort and the, you know, severity of it, particularly kidney infection that could damage your kidney. So you definitely don’t want to get there. So as a preventative, you can look to asparagus, carrots, and celery, all of which can be juiced, and in fact, I recommend that because you’re going to get more potent properties when you juice the vegetables. You’re actually concentrating, all right.

The asparagus filled with B vitamins and also antioxidants. It's used traditionally to prevent kidney stones. So any kind of crystallization that may occur in the kidney or the bladder, this is beautiful. Celery is a diuretic, naturally helps to flush out the urinary tract, and carrots, the vitamin A or beta-carotene, which is a precursor of vitamin A, really helps to boost the immune system. So the three together are wonderful.

There is another secret weapon that we use in Chinese medicine. This is mung beans, by the way, and it’s really something very similar to a lentil, for example, but smaller, and it’s, it’s used to clear infections, detoxify, flush out the urinary tract system. So you can make a soup out of this, just similar to when you make a lentil soup. And so together, these vegetables and beans can help you protect and ensure a healthy urinary system.
