The AACE (2005) recommends the self exam for several categories of thyroid patients or these of risk groups called “Thyroid neck check”:
“stand in front of the mirror;
have a light source on the side
tilt your head back
watch/feel your neck while swallowing
if you see/feel hard lumps you may have nodule;
If mass disappears as you stretching your neck or not moving while you are swallowing, this is not thyroid related”

Be sure you know the reason for hypothyroidism:
Autoimmune, post-partum, etc.
In addition to the TSH test be sure to have free T4 test
Also it can be not a bad idea to have thyroid ultrasound done once in a while
{your neck looks swollen a bit, but I can be wrong [hopefully])
