Warning Signs of Stroke

May 4 was Stroke Alert Day. This is a good time to familiarize yourself with the warning signs of stroke. Many deaths and serious disabilities from stroke result from a delay in seeking treatment. People often don't realize that what they're experiencing is a stroke and by the time they take action things may have progressed to a point of no return.

"Most strokes are caused by blood clots that clog arteries and block blood supply to parts of the brain. In such patients the drug tPA can dissolve clots and restore blood supple. tPA is most effective if given within three hours of beginning of stroke symptoms."

Be alert for warning signs. Some of these are numbness or tingling in the face; weakness in the face, leg or arm; difficulties with vision or speech; dizziness or confusion.

If you think you or someone you care about may be having a stroke, get medical attention right away.
