Dr. Mansfield provides advice for patients with sleep apnea who have a difficult time sleeping with a CPAP machine, and are losing hope.
Dr. Mansfield:
You know, I don’t believe there is such a thing as without hope. I have never met a patient that I didn’t think could be improved or helped or assisted. First of all, it’s critical that with people on CPAP that they have somebody who is very knowledgeable in using the machine. They need a doctor who is an expert in helping them with the machinery, with the masks, with the nasal pillows that they are using because not one size fits all and you need to really work with that doctor to get the best use you can, and some patients still can’t perform and in those patients surgery can be a wonderful alternative.
And I really feel that we have to really explore that on the patients that did function well with CPAP. I have yet to meet a patient that I could say to you there is no hope for sleep apnea. That, I am not sure that actually exists.
