Dr. Mansfield provides advice for patients who have CPAP machine complications.
Dr. Mansfield:
Well there are some patients that just can’t wear a CPAP. For example, patients that have ear problems or eustation tube problems where the pressure can blow into the ear and cause complications of hearing loss, infections. Patients that have had surgery in the sinuses for example, for problems between the interface of the brain and sinus, may not be candidates for CPAP due to the risks of CPAP.
If you think about it, you are putting pressure into a system. You have to make sure the system can accept the pressure. The higher the pressure, the greater the risk, and then there are people who simply can’t wear it. They feel like they are asphyxiating. They feel like they are suffocating. They feel like the intimacy with their spouse has been violated and those people just can’t wear it or unwilling to wear it for a good reason.
