Dr. Jacoby discusses if women who go to nail salons are putting their health at risk.

Dr. Jacoby:
Nail salons–lot of bad rap for nail salons. They are not all bad. Lots of patients come in to see me and say, “I got this problem with my nail in a nail salon.” Well, no, I think that’s when they first recognized it.

Now I am sure there are bad nail salons like there are bad anything, but for the most part, I think these are very professional people. They are very conscientious of what they do, and I actually recommend patients to have periodic pedicures because I think the nail salon technicians can identify these problems and refer them for a proper treatment.

If a patient has been to a nail salon and gets a cut on the nail, yeah, that could be a serious problem. They should see a podiatrist. Infections, not a fungal infection but a bacterial infection, that is a problem.
